Ahh 1904, the simpler times. When there were only about 8,000 cars in the country and 45 stars on the flag. It was also the year—for the purposes of this blog post—when the laundry machine was invented. And that seemingly-random fact is relevant because it represents the very first seed of smart home technology being planted.
Okay, it’s a stretch, we know. But here’s the deal—smart home technology became possible the second we started inventing things to help us with domestic life.
Seventy years later, the X10 was invented. This is an industry standard protocol which enables home devices to communicate with each other via radio waves. Its invention marks the point in the story at which the growth curve of smart home tech becomes exponential.
By 2013, the home automation industry was worth a little bit more than five billion dollars. And a five billion dollar industry is great, but this one isn’t without its growing pains.
One such problem was the need for complex adapters or “hubs” between a slew of different technologies like WiFi, ZWave and Zigbee. Adding yet another wireless system inside the home created complexity because the phone/tablet control console can’t communicate immediately with the embedded radios. It was IoT equivalent of a house of cards. Something needed to be done.
In a nutshell, SecuRemote helps all your devices understand each other by having them communicate via the same language (Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)) instead of all the disparate radio protocols they had been using previously.
This means that everything just became interoperable from your Android or IOS device of preference. And, because SecuRemote is an end-to-end system, you don’t need to worry about hardware and software from different manufacturers being compatible with each other. It also means you don’t have to worry about your devices being backward or forward compatible either.
This network can host thousands of Bluetooth nodes, and it forms and maintains itself automatically so you don’t even need to worry about setting it up.
These days, we can adjust room temperature from our phone thanks to Nest, order more milk while looking for it in our fridge with Amazon Echo, and employ a cute little robot to roll around a sweep for us thanks to Roomba. This is magic compared to 1904, and it’s only going to grow more robust—the industry is speculated to top $12B by 2020. It’s an exciting future to think about—and a decidedly effortless one, too.
At Delphian, we look forward to innovating our way there with you.
